Group Special Risk Occupational Accident & Health Insurance Program
The Alternate Plan was developed and launched in 1992. It is a Group Special Risk Occupational Accident and Health Insurance program consisting of the following benefits: Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Partial and Total Disability (PTD), Weekly Accident & Indemnity (WAI), comprehensive Medical Benefits Schedule (first payor to 24-hour Group Insurance benefits), and an optional Traumatic Event Benefit (TEB), available at an additional cost.
This plan provides coverage for non-mandatory NAICS codes (and those who are currently members of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, who may request and procure permission to opt-out and bind private coverage). This Insurance program is ideal for:
  • Banks and Trust Companies
  • Credit Unions
  • Mortgage Brokers
  • Insurance companies
  • Insurance Brokers, Advisors, Consultants, MGA’s, TPA’s
  • Computer software developers
  • Private health care practices
  • Trade unions
  • Professional Associations
  • Private day care Centres
  • Private nursery schools
  • Private schools
  • Summer Camps (with the exception of those involved with Fishing/Archery/Target Shooting)
  • Travel agencies
  • Private clubs
  • Photographers
  • Hair stylists/salons/barbers (with some exceptions)
  • Shoe shine stands
  • Funeral directing and embalming
  • Taxidermists
  • Not-for-Profit organizations confirmed as “non-mandatory/exempt” in writing, by the Board
The Alternate plan provides coverage for workplace accidents and injuries while engaged in occupational activities, and their associated costs. The plan offers a comprehensive accidental medical reimbursement benefit, for each workplace incident. In addition, there is a rehabilitation benefit available, per incident. There are also benefits available for hospitalization, transportation, home, and workplace modification.
When injuries covered result in a loss of life, there is a death benefit as well as a funeral expense benefit payable to the plan member’s designated beneficiary(ies).
The Alternate Plan covers all permanent full and part-time employees for occupational accident and injury, including those employees who are not eligible for coverage under their employer’s Group Insurance plan (because they do not meet the minimum hours per week for eligibility; here is an option for permanent part-time and contract employees without benefits). Summer students, contract and temporary employees, board directors, and volunteers are covered under this plan, for periods of up to three months (please note the coverage for these plan members does not include partial and total disability or, the medical schedule of benefits).

The Alternate Plan: Comprehensive, affordable, and easy-to-administer occupational coverage to protect and insure your plan members’ health and safety. Are you interested in learning more about our unique and comprehensive occupational Insurance Program? Click here for our contact information.

*Please note: Only the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) can determine if a plan sponsor is non-mandatory or exempt – and able to opt-out of, the Government mandated program. However, plan sponsors should be aware of changes to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, effective January 1, 2020.

Effective January 1, 2022 – New plan sponsor locations entering the Alternate Plan Insurance program will be required to remit an exemption letter from WSIB (or belong to a non-mandatory industry code, as confirmed at the WSIB website). We feel this change is important and necessary, to ensure compliant participation in the program.

With these points in mind, recent government budget constraints – and increasing costs, have made The Alternate Plan extremely attractive to employers who qualify for private occupational coverage.
